Welcome to 2nd grade!! :)
I don't want to disturb the end of your summer, or make the children groan as they realize that they will be getting up early again in less than a week...but I'd like to take the opportunity to introduce myself, and ask a favor of you.
My name is Jessica Hubbard and I have the privilege of teaching your child this year. I grew up in Bellingham, WA and have been in the Portland area since 2002. I am an avid reader, an outdoor adventurer (though some of my adventures are not quite as exciting as movies and TV), and a closet artsy person...I haven't quite figured out my medium yet, but I love the act of creating. I love to cook, so if you have any great recipes, feel free to pass them my way...and I love living in the Northwest. I am also a casual runner and hope to have a "running club" on Fridays this year for students who want to spend their lunch break jogging around the track with me. :)
This will be my 6th year teaching, my 5th year in the Newberg School District. I have had the privilege of teaching 3rd, Kindergarten, 1st, and a 4/5 split, and now I am in 2nd grade where I feel quite happy to be.
I graduated from George Fox University in 2006 with my BS in Elementary Education and have been teaching ever since. I continue to take classes and attend trainings as I enjoy learning, it keeps me teaching well. I will be going back to school to get my Masters this summer, that's how much I love learning! :)
I believe in a hands on approach to learning, in as many areas as possible. I do have high expectations of my students, and I try to use Love and Logic on a regular basis in my classroom management. I work really hard to get to know each student, and find where their strengths are, and where I can help them iron out some weaknesses. I am very passionate about reading, and history and I hope to open the world of books and those that have come before us to your students. I have taken many math classes, and am committed to making math an approachable and enjoyable experience for students, as this was not the case for me it's important that I do this for my students. The district has placed a large emphasis on writing for this year, so we will be working hard on our writing. Look forward to many stories and writing coming home. We have a great 2nd grade team this year. Our teachers are absoluately fabulous! Mrs. Wolcott, Mrs. Fox and I were all together last year and we did some great things! This year we are adding the beautiful and talented Mrs. LaFave! She brings lots of enthusiasm and some new ideas for us and we are all working on fine tuning our awesome grade level! It's going to be a great year!!
I have created a survey for parents that I would really appreciate you looking over and taking. It's about your expectations for the year, and any insight you can give me into your student so that I can serve them, and you, to the best of my ability. Please click on this link: Welcome to 2nd Grade and thoughtfully answer the questions before school starts or as soon as possible.
Let me be the first to officially welcome you to the 2nd grade, and the 2010-2011 school year. I will see you Wednesday, August 31st for Supply Night, so I can meet you! Now...back to the fun of summer!
Signing off,
Mrs. H
